Blackett was Managing Director of the Charlaw and Sacriston Colliery Co. Ltd. But he was much more than this. An innovator in mining engineering and mines rescue, a soldier, a prominent supporter of local causes, he was often at odds with his workers but retained their respect. Above all, Blackett was a highly courageous man who on several occasions risked his own life to rescue miners trapped underground and was awarded medals for his bravery. This lecture will tell the story of a local hero. And, have you ever wondered why the road marked Acorn Close Lane on Google Maps is known locally as Blackett’s Bank? This lecture will tell you why.
John Tomaney is a Pro-Provost and Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at University College London and chair of the Trustees at Redhills. He has strong family connections with Sacriston and has been researching its history for several years. This lecture follows one he gave last year when he sketched the early history of the village.
This event is sponsored by Redhills – the Durham Miners’ Hall and University College London. A bar will be open.
Free light refreshments will be available.
