Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Redhills Durham Miners Hall?

Redhills Durham Miners Hall is currently closed to the public, and we hope to reopen in early 2025, you will be able to buy tickets to visit on tours, book conferences and attend special events. Below are some frequently asked questions which may help with your enquiry.

My father was a miner, can you help us with welfare queries?

Durham Miners Association is one of our funders and will have an office within Redhills Durham Miners Hall when we reopen. Durham Miners Association endeavours to help its members with advice and signposting to the relevant organisations that can help. If the person who requires help is a member of Durham Miners Association, please call 0191 384 3515.

If the person who requires help is no longer a paying member of Durham Miners Association, advice can be found at Advice in County Durham here: https://adviceincountydurham.org.uk/

If you live in the City of Sunderland area, SHARP provides advice and guidance on welfare benefits, debt management, housing etc. Please visit this link https://www.sunderlandinformationpoint.co.uk

I am researching my family history and family tree; can I access the Durham Miners Association archive?

We are currently ongoing a complete renovation at Redhills Durham Miners Hall, and all of the Durham Miners Association archives have been removed from the building. We are working on a project to make the archives accessible to the public by moving them to The Story at Mount Oswald. While this process is underway, you can find out more information about how to access mining records which are currently available to the public by visiting here: https://redhillsdurham.org/durham-miners-association-archive/

I would like a banner or a brass band to attend my event; can I book them?

While Redhills Durham Miners Hall is the official home to the banners, they are on long-term loan to the communities to which they belong. If your community does not currently have a banner located there, the banner may be on loan to Beamish Museum which is where some banners went on long-term loan when they were no longer paraded at the Durham Miners Gala. Redhills Durham Miners Hall is home to around thirty banners, which were retired as they are too delicate to be paraded; these include the early banners from Bearpark, Whitworth Park, Byers Green, Blackhall, Black Prince, Brussleton, Chopwell, Harrington, Kibblesworth, Langley Park, Monkwearmouth (1920s), Morrison Busty, Randolph, Ravensworth, Rough Lea, Sacriston, Tursdale, West Thornley,

We work with the County Durham Banner Group Association, which works together to ensure banners are still paraded at the Miners Gala each year. We are happy to take your enquiry and liaise with our partners. You can email us here

Brass bands are independent of the Redhills Charity and the Miners Hall; you can find a list of brass bands and their contact details here: https://www.dcbba.org.uk/member-bands

I would like to buy a pit token; how do I do it?

Our popular pit token scheme within the pitman’s parliament is currently paused, while the Miners Hall is closed for renovation. You can leave your deals on our expression of interest form and we will be in contact when we are in a position to take more orders: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfe4Yb3ltnDbFibM55hoeH6OgLZGqS5xk39UzNt5bCetoRnYw/viewform

Do you have any jobs available?

Any paid vacancies will be advertised via https://redhillsdurham.org/vacancies/ and all relevant job sites. Volunteer roles will be vital to running the Miners Hall as we look to open to the public most weekends for the first time in our history. We will be recruiting and training volunteers as we get closer to renovation completion in late 2024, but if you would like to offer your support before then at any of our community projects or offer at the Durham Miners Gala in July, we would love to hear from you. You can leave us a message via https://redhillsdurham.org/volunteering/ or volunteers@redhillsdurham.org

I have an idea for an event I'd like to run at Redhills Durham Miners Hall

We would love to hear all about it! We are incredibly fortunate to operate as an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation and supporting local creatives is core to our mission. We have limited resource per year to offer seed funding to local artists for projects which fulfil the design principles of Redhills, which are:

  • The big picture: Every activity must be designed with deep knowledge of audience and place.
  • Instrumental outcomes: It’s not enough to deliver outputs, each activity must provoke outcomes.
  • Co-creation: Each activity must have a high level of involvement and co-creation.
  • Partnership working and delivery: Each activity must leverage partnerships and plot a pathway to sustainability.
  • Building on good practice: Each activity must acknowledge and engage with existing practitioners, groups and community activities.
  • Action research: Each activity is designed as an experiment we can learn from.
  • Segmentation and differentiation: Each activity in the plan is designed and differentiated to meet the needs of specific segments and target groups.
  • Digital dimensions Each activity should blend digital and analogue to enrich creativity, extend our reach, build our library of content, document our work and augment our collections.

If you think that your project supports our design principles, we would love to talk to you about working together. Please contact admin@redhillsdurham.org and ask for a project proposal form and one of our team will get back to you.
