The 2022 Durham Brass Festival launched on 10th July with the highly anticipated Binding Time project, by Field Music and accompanied by NASUWT Riverside Band, being heard in its entirety for the first time.

The Gala Theatre was the perfect choice for this year’s festival launch, which happened one day after the 136th Durham Miners Gala. Supported by Arts Council England, Field Music created a new suite of songs inspired by the growth and decline of coal mining in the region, the struggles of mining communities, and the miners’ fraught path to achieving political representation – named ‘Binding Time, Songs and Stories from the Durham Coalfield’. Field Music, whose members are Sunderland-born brothers Peter and David Brewis, were accompanied by a seven-piece brass section from the NASUWT Riverside Band.

You can see a clip of the live performance below:

Attendee’s were incredibly glowing on social media about the event:

Field Music spoke to Sharuna Sagar for BBC Radio 4’s Front Row programme to discuss the project in more depth you can listen to what they had to say from around 23 minutes in

Field Music outlined their extensive reading list for the project during the event, which Field Music kindly disclosed via a twitter thread after the concert

A really special evening and the team at Redhills is delighted with the outcome; so much time thought, and effort has gone into every verse and chord. Did you attend? Please let us know your thoughts via social media @redhillsdurham on most platforms.
