In collaboration with Redhills, The Cultural Spring and UCL, local photographer Andy Martin is undertaking a photography research project to explore the identity of Washington.

We are looking for ex-miners from Washington who either worked in the town’s collieries or elsewhere across the Durham Coalfield to participate in our project’s first phase.

Tintype portraits of participants will be made using the 1850s Collodion process. We would also like to chat to people about their experiences of living and working in Washington.

The resulting images will be exhibited across the area later this year and the research will form part of UCL’s ongoing research programme in the North East.

If you would like to get involved by sitting for a portrait and having a chat about your pit experiences, we would love you to join us at Washington F Pit on any of the dates below – one portrait sitting will be happening at each advertised time; therefore only one ticket needs registering for the person taking part.
