International Womens' Day 2025
We are marking International Women’s Day 2025 with this online exhibition highlighting some of the many women making a big difference through the work that they do within the coalfield communities. Women whose strength, generosity, talent, dedication, and impact have shaped their communities. Through their portraits and personal narratives, we honour their voices and celebrate their often unseen contributions.
In addition to the ten amazing women showcased here and their contributions, this project has been made possible through the collaboration of a creative team. We would like to thank photographer Hazel Plater who has travelled to many locations in the production of the portraits, our Durham University placement student Kiwa Chen who has been advising on the technical and media production, and our volunteer Sophie Bodenham who has supported the writing and editing process.
Recognised by the United Nations, International Women’s Day is an annual celebration and awareness raising platform which honours the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women worldwide. It serves as a call to action for accelerating gender parity and women’s rights.
