Working in partnership with New Writing North and UCL, we are proud to share details of an exciting new project: North East Now. This initiative will commission ten original pieces by North East-based writers, each offering a unique perspective on the future of our region post-devolution. The commissions aim to capture the hopes, challenges, and visions for the North East as it embarks on a new chapter under the new combined authority

A Platform for Local Voices

North East Now is more than just a writing project; it’s a platform for local voices to share their insights and reflections on the transformative changes sweeping through our region. By partnering with New Writing North, Redhills is dedicated to fostering a rich literary culture that not only celebrates the heritage of the North East but also looks forward to its future.

The Commissioned Works

Throughout the year, these ten pieces will be published both online and in print, thanks to our media partner, Reach. This dual approach ensures that the works reach a broad audience, engaging the community in conversations about the future of the North East. Online links to these compelling stories and essays that delve into the heart of regional transformation can be found here:

Culminating Event at Durham Book Festival 2024

The project will culminate in a landmark event at the Durham Book Festival 2024. This gathering will feature an open reflection and discussion on the first six months under the new combined authority. It promises to be a thought-provoking session where writers, policymakers, and community members come together to assess the initial impacts of devolution and to envision the path ahead.

Why This Project Matters

The North East has a rich history of resilience and innovation. As we stand on the brink of significant change, it is crucial to capture the narratives of those who live and breathe this region. By commissioning local writers, North East Now ensures that the stories told are authentic and grounded in real experiences. These pieces will serve as both a historical record and a source of inspiration for future generations.
